What does motherhood at Kopila Valley look like?

This month, we celebrate motherhood in all its beautiful forms. At Kopila Valley, motherhood does not have just one definition; it is many stories built together by care, sacrifice, and love.

It looks like a single mother walking her child to school in the morning sun. It looks like a teacher staying back after class to make sure a student understands a lesson. It looks like caregivers who remember every small detail that makes a child feel safe and seen.

Motherhood here lives in biological mothers, foster and adoptive mothers, and also in aunties, sisters, teachers, grandmothers, and guardians who step in with open hearts. It is present in every adult who chooses to nurture, guide, and stand beside a child.

Manju says, “It’s been nearly seven years since I started looking after the children at the Children’s Home. Being a sister figure they can depend on so completely has given my life true meaning and fulfillment.”

A woman holds a small child wearing a pink and white hooded sweatshirt. Both are smiling.

Sukma shares, “I left my two daughters with their grandmother and came to the Children’s Home looking for work. Little did I know that this journey would lead me to become a mother figure to many children.”

A woman wearing a head scarf serves a meal to two small children at a table.

Lalita says, “I have worked as a cook in the school kitchen for almost 11 years. My day feels complete when I see the children go home with full stomachs, smiling faces, and nourished bodies.”

A woman wearing a food service head covering stands in a large commercial kitchen, holding a large pan of rice.

Karma shares, “As a school nurse, my role is to care for the children’s health, but also to understand what they are feeling. I try to comfort them, listen to them, and help them heal, both inside and out. Being there for them in moments of pain and care is what makes my work truly meaningful.”

A nurse sits at a desk in a medical office with shelving with prescriptions on the wall. An adolescent girl stands in front of the desk facing away from the camera.

Punam says, “Every day I teach my students something new, and in return, I feel truly fulfilled in life. Watching them learn and grow gives my work meaning and fills my heart with joy.”

This month, we honor all the women, teachers, and caregivers who hold our children close in ways both seen and unseen. And THANK YOU to all the types of moms who are caring for children around the world!
