Taking It Outside – Learning, That Is!
At Kopila Valley School, we believe that the best learning happens beyond the walls of a classroom. Education in our community was once limited to rote memorization and teachers reading from textbooks. But as we’ve integrated sustainability into our curriculum, Kopila students are now engaged in dynamic, hands-on lessons that connect them deeply with their Nepali heritage and the environment around them.
With your support, we’ve created a vibrant outdoor learning experience that brings lessons to life. Here’s a glimpse of what our students have been up to lately:
🦉 This year’s Bird Watching Club, with 22 eager students from grades 6 to 12, recently held its first session. The students explored the school grounds, identifying local bird species and gaining a deeper appreciation for the biodiversity right in their backyard.
🌍 The Sustainability Ambassadors Club has 36 members and meets regularly to discuss environmental topics. Recently, they watched and discussed the documentary Ancient Futures, exploring traditional practices and how they can inform sustainable living today.
♻️ School-wide Waste Management Orientation sessions teach every student the principles of reducing, reusing, and recycling, helping to instill lifelong habits of environmental stewardship.
🌱 Students got their hands dirty in Gardening Classes learning about pollinators, marigold cultivation, and exploring our seed bank. Rainy weather delayed some sessions, but it also offered lessons about the impact of weather on agriculture—a vital part of their real-world education.
🌳 Hands-On Learning in Local Heritage: Grade 8 students took a field trip to the nearby forest and the historical site of Kakrebihar. They learned about local biodiversity, met with farmers, and discussed soil conservation—integrating lessons from science and social studies into a memorable, practical experience.
🏫 Math and Construction: the Grade 9 math class recently explored rammed earth technology, a sustainable method used in our school buildings, blending practical skills with academic learning.
With your help, Kopila Valley students are building environmental awareness and resilience while preparing for future careers. They are learning to care for their environment and community, gaining skills that will empower them and bring more HOPE for their futures.
Will you join us with a gift today to keep this vital learning going?
Your support helps us take education outdoors, providing students with hands-on experiences that inspire a love of learning, build resilience, and prepare them for the challenges ahead.
Thank you for being a part of our journey toward a brighter, more sustainable future for Kopila Valley students.
With gratitude,
Sunita Bhandari, Sustainability Coordinator
