Serving is Learning – and a Whole Lot More

At Kopila Valley School, our holistic education prepares students to become kind, considerate, and proactive adults. In our Futures program, we help students plan for higher education, careers, and independent life. AND we also help students develop character and service skills, preparing them for a future of empathy and care for the community. Through service learning projects, we challenge students to identify real-world problems and take ownership of the solutions. Here is how our recent student-led projects have translated classroom lessons into leadership, civic engagement, and empathy.

  • Grade 12 Literacy Initiative & Pop-Up Cafe
    • What: Students ran a two-day pop-up cafe to raise funds, purchased over 200 books, and hosted an interactive reading session for Grade 3 students at a nearby community school without library resources.
    • Why: This project fostered empathy as students identified a need and worked to bridge educational disparities in the community. It deepened civic engagement through direct investment in local literacy, while building leadership as students independently managed a business venture and guided the younger children.

  • Grade 11 Media Literacy Workshop
    • What: Students researched, designed, and facilitated an interactive digital literacy workshop to teach peers at a local school how to identify fake news and counter misinformation.
    • Why: Creating the curriculum and speaking publicly strengthened students’ leadership and teamwork. They drove civic engagement by promoting a culture of responsible information consumption, motivated by an empathetic desire to protect younger learners from digital bias and propaganda.

  • Grade 11 Democratic Values Mural
    • What: Students raised their own funds, secured local permissions, and painted a vibrant public mural representing democracy, inclusion, and equality at a local school.
    • Why: Handling the project’s logistics, budgeting, and official coordination developed strong leadership and project management skills. The artwork itself served as an act of civic engagement by sparking community dialogue around citizenship, while visually championing empathy through messages of equality and inclusion for all residents.

 

By blending entrepreneurial learning, mentorship, and service, we are proud to watch students come together to create meaningful, lasting educational impact in the wider community. Empathy is part of who we are at Kopila Valley. We are incredibly proud of the growth of these students, knowing that our graduates will leave our doors ready to be a powerful force for good in the world.
