Caring for Animals

When we think of outdoor learning and caring for our planet’s creatures, we think of Juddha, Krishna, and Lanka. Together, these three members of the Kopila Valley team care for the animals on the school farm, supply milk and other foods to students, and teach children about milking cows, tending goats, and so much more – their kindness and empathy are models for the Kopila Valley students to follow.

13 Years of Dedication: Meet Juddha

For the past 13 years, Juddha has been a dedicated team member at Kopila Valley, contributing in countless ways to keep our campus safe, welcoming, and thriving.

Juddha first joined us as a night security guard, ensuring the safety of our children and facilities through the late hours. Over the years, his role has evolved, but his commitment has remained the same.

Today, Juddha cares for our birds, goats, rabbits, ducks, chickens, turkeys, and others that call our campus home. From feeding and caring for the animals to cutting fresh grass for them, he helps create a healthy and nurturing environment for our furry and feathered friends.

When the Early Childhood Village students come to learn about animals, he gets really excited because his childish character comes out. He loves making them laugh with his goofiness.

His day doesn’t end there. In the afternoons, Juddha continues his position as night security guard.

Whether caring for animals or safeguarding our community, Juddha’s hard work, reliability, and dedication have made a lasting impact over the past 13 years. We are grateful for all that he does and proud to celebrate his contributions to our community.

10 Years Of Dedication: Meet Krishna

Long before joining Kopila Valley, Krishna spent her days breaking rocks in Surkhet to support herself and her family. The work was difficult, physically demanding, and often done under the harsh sun. Today, her days look very different!!

Krishna is responsible for caring for our herd of 12 cows. From feeding them grass and water to cleaning their living spaces, collecting manure, and monitoring their health, she ensures that every cow receives the care they deserve. Her work begins early and requires patience, consistency, and compassion.

“The hands that once broke stones now care for living beings.  The work is different, but the determination is the same. Every day, I am grateful for the opportunity to do meaningful work and contribute to something bigger than myself.”

The cow farm is an important part of our campus, and Krishna’s dedication helps keep it running smoothly each day. Whether she is tending to the cows or maintaining their environment, her efforts contribute to the wellbeing of both the animals and our community.

11 years of dedication: Meet Lanka

At 55 years old, Lanka is one of the steady hands behind Kopila Valley’s cow farm. Ask him what he does, and he’ll answer with a smile,
“When the talk of cows comes to the table, it’s Lanka.”

And he’s not wrong!!!

From the moment the sun rises, Lanka can be found among the cows—feeding them, checking on their health, making sure they are comfortable, and tending to their every need. His days revolve around the herd, and over these 11 years, he has built a deep understanding of each cow in his care.

One of his most important responsibilities is milking the cows. Every morning and afternoon, he collects nearly 50 liters of fresh milk. That milk travels straight to the Children’s Home, where it becomes a source of nourishment for the children—served as milk, transformed into yogurt, and made into fresh paneer.

Long before Lanka arrived at Kopila Valley, he spent years tending cows and buffaloes in his home village of Kalikot. The knowledge he gained there now helps sustain the farm and contribute to the wellbeing of 50+ children  at Kopila Valley Children’s Home.

Those who work alongside Lanka know that if they need him, they won’t have to search far. He is almost always in the cow shed ensuring that the animals are healthy and thriving.

Lanka is humorous, and you can see that when he teaches little kids how to milk. They’re all giggling and keeling over with laughter. Everywhere he goes, there is joy.

It’s a blessing to have such tender-hearted adults teaching our students sustainable lifestyle skills!
