Building our Dream Playground

Saturday, October 07, 2017

I just got back to Kopila early this week.  I pulled into the driveway, dropped my bags, and was smothered with hug after hug. I soon realized that a bunch of my children were missing.  I was told they were over playing on the new community playground. I walked with some of the little girls down the dirt road to go check it out and I couldn't believe what I saw.

A bird's eye view of the playground space

The grass was so green, the sun was setting, and there was the most beautiful rainbow I've ever seen right over the playground.  It was 6:30 at night and there were literally hundreds of children there.  It took everything in me not to burst into tears.

A group of twenty 6 to 9 year old boys had an epic game of marbles going.  There were two soccer scrimmages happening, one for girls and one for boys, which was followed by an intense shootout.  A group of little toddlers played in the dirt.  A group of little girls sang songs and skipped around in circles. There was a game of freeze tag happening, and kids just sitting around laughing and chatting.

Playtime!

Yagay came running up to me and said, "Mom's here!!!!!" There is still nothing there except two goals, and a bulldozed flat piece of land, but I still couldn't believe the transformation.  It reminded me of "The Field of Dreams" movie, and the quote, "If you build it, they will come."  To think that none of these children have ever had a safe real playground or space to play before makes this space that much more meaningful.

My Co-Founder and Principal both told me how much better our school has felt since starting our after school program.  Now, we can finally have proper physical education classes. The playground is in full use from sunrise, at 6 in the morning, until sunset, at 7 in the evening. It's been one of the single best improvements we've ever made for our school and our community.

The team here is working on dreaming up the playground - the signage, plans for building a proper fence, and putting play structures in like slides, swings, and volleyball/badminton nets. Hopefully, we can keep the grass growing green and strong, even when monsoon season is over.  We'd also like to add a public toilet stall and water source.

I want to send a huge thank you to Team Tri for Kopila, for such a wonderful triathlon this year and for raising the funds for this community playground site. It was sooo much fun and definitely a year to remember. Thank you all for your training, dedication, fundraising, and spreading the word on the work we do for the children here. We surpassed our goal!!  Blew it out of the water and it's been the highest goal we've ever set for ourselves.  I'm so proud and grateful for the initiative of Jill, Brian and Olivia.

The champions of Team Tri for Kopila!

I love that we did this together! I can't wait to show you this playground and park of ours in action. We'll be caputuring all the magic that is happening.

So much love to you all.  My heart is full.  Not sure how I got so lucky to be surrounded by such wonderful people.  You are the best of the best. Thank you!!!

xoxo Maggie
