Alexander Marcus Aka Marky

Saturday, September 26, 2009

Welcome to our new volunteer Alexander Marcus "Marky" originally from Connecticut but also Pomona College where he just graduated as a religious studies major.  Marky spent a semester studying abroad in Nepal during his junior year of college and learned a lot of Nepali.  He also loved Nepal so much that he decided to come back after he graduated and now here he is with us.

It's been great having him around and teaching him the ropes.  He even got a lesson on the scooter today.  (Side note:  In case you couldn't tell from previous posts I am IN LOVE with our scooter... honestly friends, once you drive a scooter, you will never want to drive anything else in the whole world.  It's the truth.)

This afternoon I left Marky alone for the first time with the house full of hyped up kids to take the older girls out shopping.  I pointed to a bag full of cucumbers and guavas for an afternoon snack and was sort of like "okay dude, time to fend for yourself."  I came home this evening to a very calm house and Marky hanging out in his room with three napping children.  I'd say he's going to do very well here :)

It's the start of the big Dashain festival and the city is bustling and extra joyous.  I love this time of year.  Here at home we've been taking it pretty easy.  We're planning our first outing EVER to Bardiya National Park next week where there are elephant rides, fresh water dolphins, rhinos, hikes, campfires, etc.  I'm hoping to reenact some of my best childhood summer memories spent camping in the northeast with my family.  I can't wait!

Thank you all dearly for your kind messages.  Your words help so much.
