Letter #11 (50 Love Letters)

Dear K,

From the moment I saw you, I knew you belonged in our family. It was instantaneous. I knew it in my belly and it was like no other feeling I've ever felt. From the very first minute you walked into our home with your big sister, it was like you had been there all along, like you had lived at Kopila your entire life. I've never seen anything like it actually. You fit right in and assimilated so naturally. You made us laugh more, savor more, take joy in the little things. Tope Uncle brought an ice cream truck to the house that day and we all celebrated.

You learned English in two seconds, like some sort of prodigy. You picked up on all the slang words first. "Wowwwww" and "awesome" and "Oh my God!" were your faves. You were the kid at school that every teacher raved about, "the model student" who follows all the rules and goes above and beyond on every assignment and takes your school work home and practices in your room until you know it all like the back of your hand. By your second term you brought home straight A's.

You knew how lucky you were to be going to school, to be given that chance and you didn't take a second for granted. You soared and flew and took the opportunity and ran for your life. Every time you saw me, you looked at me in the eyes, shrieked with joy, and with the most sincerity I've ever felt, said, "Thank you, thank you, thank you!" over and over and over again. It made me cry because it was me who was thankful. You did it all and I just sat there and watched.

You are the embodiment of all things good and pure. You are resilience and strength, a diamond that emerged from the most unexpected place. You make me want to do more and be more and work harder and find every girl in the world like you and make sure they have a chance because you make it so worth it and the thought of us not finding each other is inconceivable. Thank you, thank you, thank you for bringing so much happiness to our home. Thank you for the hope you bring me. Thanks for being you.

I love you so so sooooo so so sooooo much. Never forget it.

Xoxo Mom
