Letter #13 (50 Love Letters)

Dear K, I swear I just spent the past five minutes staring at your picture and smiling. My favorite thing about you is your laugh. I love when you're telling a story and you start laughing so hard you can't even get the words out and I have no idea what you're trying to say but I start laughing too. I love seeing you curled up with a book and how you always give me the play by play on what you're reading and what scene you're on.

Letter #12 (50 Love Letters)

Dear K, How is it possible that you're 18? I'm not old enough to have an 18 year old!! You call me mom but you're probably more like a brother to me. Sometimes I feel like you're my big brother because you always take care of me. You're the man of the house for sure. I worry that you take on too much responsibility. Y

Letter #11 (50 Love Letters)

Dear K, From the moment I saw you, I knew you belonged in our family. It was instantaneous. I knew it in my belly and it was like no other feeling I've ever felt. From the very first minute you walked into our home with your big sister, it was like you had been there all along, like you had lived at Kopila your entire life. I've never seen anything like it actually. You fit right in and assimilated so naturally. You made us laugh more, savor more, take joy in the little things. Tope Uncle brought an ice cream truck to the house that day and we all celebrated. You learned English in two seconds, like some sort of prodigy.

Letter #10 (50 Love Letters)

Dear M, "When is MY love letter coming?" you asked me over FaceTime. So here it is. On the day you came, I looked into your eyes and felt overcome by love. You needed a name and it rolled off the tip of my tongue. "I'm going to name her Maya!" I told everyone proudly. It was the first time I ever got to choose a name on my own and it seemed to suit you so well. Maya means love in Nepali and you are one of the biggest loves of my life. Speaking of love, I also named you after Maya Angelou and whenever I'm sad or feeling down you say, "I'll go get Maya Angelou!" and you bring me one of her books from my shelf. Sometimes I swear I gave birth to you.

Letter #9 (50 Love Letters)

Dear N, When you fall asleep next to me you curl up in a ball and find a way to wrap your arms and legs around me and nuzzle your head into my neck and make sure we are completely intertwined. We have been attached at the hip since the day you came. You were born on my birthday and you were the best birthday gift I've ever been given. We have celebrated our birthdays every year together since. I've been accused of spoiling you.
